Come along with Private Jeep Excursions and explore a Lava River Cave 300 feet under the ground in Flagstaff, Arizona. This almost mile-long lava tube cave was formed roughly 700,000 years ago by molten rock that erupted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie. The top, sides and bottom of the flow cooled and solidified first, after which the insides of the lava river continued to flow creating the present cave. The cave was discovered in 1915 by lumbermen working in the area.

The Climb Down:

The entrance to the cave is a rock and boulder covered 70 foot sloped decent that levels off. The rocks can be cold, sometimes wet, and sharp. Wearing gloves during the climb down and back up is a good idea. It is an easy climb and very fun as all signs of sunlight slip away into pure darkness.

Exploring the Lave Cave:

The cave floor is cooled waves of lava that once flowed; its very hard and uneven ground. Solid hiking shoes or boots are a must to protect your ankles. There are a couple of low ceiling tight spots where crouching is required. Some sections of the cave are massive tunnel like rooms. Once we reach the end of the cave we will stop for a while and have snacks or a lunch. We will be underground for 2 to 3 hours.

Visiting Oak Creek Canyon and Downtown Sedona:

During the drive home we will take a route back through beautiful Oak Creek Canyon and downtown Sedona. You will have a chance if you like to eat dinner in Sedona.

Hiking Guide: there is an extra $50 fee to hire me as a hiking guide.

Things to Know:

  • This is a self-guided hike through the cave
  • The temperature is a cool 40 °F, 5 °C during the summer and it is not uncommon for some of the rocks to be covered with moisture or ice on the initial climb down. Wear a sweater or jacket and even have a hat to keep your core temperature up.
  • The cave can range in height from 30 feet (9.1 m) to only 2 to 3 feet (0.61 to 0.91 m).
  • There are no light sources inside. It is pitch black inside! You must have multiple sources of light especially a headlamp to keep your hands free.
  • It is recommended visitors have sturdy hiking boots because of the uneven and rocky floor you must walk over.
  • Wear gloves especially for the climb down. The rocks are jagged and uneven and can hurt your hands.
  • There are just about zero creatures, insects, or animals inside the cave. There is a small portion of the year when bats visit the cave. We do not travel to the cave during this time.
