2nd Apache Tears Mine – (1 Hour)

(pick hammer, gloves, and eye protection provided)

Legend of the Apache Tears – The name “Apache Tear” comes from a legend of the Apache tribe: about 75 Apaches and the US Cavalry fought on a mountain overlooking what is now Superior, Arizona in the 1870s. Facing defeat, the outnumbered Apache warriors rode their horses off the mountain to their deaths rather than be captured. The wives and families of the warriors cried when they heard of the tragedy; their tears turned into stone upon hitting the ground. They say that a holder of the Apache Tear rocks will no longer cry or know suffering because the the Apache wives cried enough for all of us.

3rd Montana Mountain Loop – (5 Hours)

During this portion of the trip, we will drive off-road along a 35 mile loop with amazing scenery through a portion of the Superstition Mountains. The loop will take us about 5 hours to complete. This loop contains some beautiful stretches of narrow trail up the mountain, with multiple river crossings. There is a great pine tree forest at the top of the mountain. We will reach an elevation of 6625 feet. There are also some hairy switchbacks that we will pass through. We will visit an old stone cabin, see very rare Crested Saguaro cactus and other geological points of interest such as Elephant Arch, Keystone and Window Rock.
